Chamara Perera on Cultural Diversity in Education

Schools in America and many places worldwide are dealing with a progressively diverse cultural environment. According to Chamara Perera, this is something that Americans should embrace as the U.S. is a tremendously culturally diverse country.

As American classrooms in all forms of education are becoming more diverse every year, cultural diversity is becoming an increasingly important matter for educators throughout the education system. Forward-thinking educators would often say that ignoring the increase in diversity is somewhat counterproductive to the goals of education, and they have always hit the nail on the head.

From this realization, Chamara Perera notes that it should follow that educators who believe this are responsible for finding the best ways to foster culturally inclusive classrooms designed to help students succeed.

There are many aspects through which cultural diversity presents itself in higher education.

Race is one of the most, if not the most recognized aspects. It's important to acknowledge the impact of skin color on the much broader American culture that continues to be redefined through time. Next to race, there are other aspects of cultural diversity.

Take religion, for example. Religion is yet another way that cultural diversity presents itself. Educators need to familiarize themselves with how religious traditions can impact their students' behavior and general demeanor. Often unnoticed, there is still no denying that language is vital to making a school culturally diverse. While this may bring certain barriers and challenges, language diversity should not hinder education, notes Chamara Perera. Economic diversity is also undoubtedly present in school because students come from different financial backgrounds. When ignored, this can impact learning in more ways than most of us care to admit.

To educate America the right way, Chamara Perera mentions that one should start by being genuinely interested in cultural diversity, as much as remaining sensitive to differences.
